The $4 billion American Dream Mall mega-mall project is now being used in the contentious fight to win the Democratic primary for Florida’s governor race.

Billionaire real estate developer and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jeff Greene released a campaign ad over the weekend, questioning U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham’s ties to the northwest Miami-Dade project and her family’s role and their neighboring development. Graham, Greene, former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and Winter Park businessman Chris King are all vying for the nomination on Aug. 28.

The Graham Companies is planning a 300-acre, mixed-use development just south of American Dream Miami. The Miami-Dade County Commission approved American Dream in May.

Greene’s ad is critical of Graham’s neutral stance on the mall’s proximity to the Everglades, an issue that environmentalist groups worry will encourage more development in the area, and push the urban boundary line farther west.

Graham said she would distance herself from the Graham Companies and put her assets in a transparent trust. Back in 2015 when she became a member of Congress, Graham resigned as a board director. Her spokesperson told the Miami Herald that Graham “believes local communities should have the first and final voice on the project and to date, they have strongly supported it.” [Miami Herald] – Amanda Rabines
