American Dream mega-mall approval hits a snag
Planning council vote acts as a recommendation to state agency
The South Florida Regional Planning Council voted against American Dream Miami, a mega-mall planned for northwest Miami-Dade County.
Five of the nine-member board voted against the 6.2 million-square-foot mixed-use development. The council’s vote is used as a recommendation for the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, which has final approval of the 174-acre project, according to the Sun Sentinel. If rejected, developer Triple Five Group could revise and resubmit their proposal, a council member told the newspaper.
Those voting against the project are concerned with its impact on traffic congestion and on the environment.
As planned, American Dream Miami calls for 16-story indoor ski slope, a 20-slide water park, a 14-screen 3-D movie theater, 2,000 hotel rooms, and a performing arts center representing 2.7 million square feet of entertainment and common space, plus the retail component.
