Bankrupt retailer Mattress Firm will close at least three stores in South Florida and seven others elsewhere in the state.

Mattress Firm, which filed for bankruptcy on Oct. 5, is immediately closing 200 stores, including two in Miami and one in Fort Lauderdale.

The Miami stores that are closing or already have closed are at 7703 West Flagler Street and 14200 Southwest 8th Street, and the Fort Lauderdale store is at 3520 North Federal Highway.

The other Florida stores closing immediately are in Jacksonville, Lakeland, Orlando, Pensacola, Sanford, Stuart and Tallahassee.

G’Nai Blakemore, a spokeswoman for Mattress Firm, said the company will announce additional store closings over the next 45 to 60 days.

Mattress Firm has more than 50 stores in Florida, according to its website.

The company has announced plans to close as many as 700 stores nationwide.

“We have too many stores in close proximity to each other,” Steve Stagner, executive chairman, president and CEO of Mattress Firm said in a press release.

Houston-based Mattress Firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows the company to continue operating as it restructures itself.

The company, founded in 1986, listed more than $1 billion of assets and debts in its bankruptcy petition, and its unsecured creditors include Simmons Manufacturing and Serta Mattress. [Sun-Sentinel]Mike Seemuth
