A South Tampa mansion owned by the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner is listed for sale with a $5.75 million asking price.

George and Joan Steinbrenner, a married couple for 56 years, bought the nearly 13,500-square-foot residence for $3.8 million in 1958. He died nine years ago, and she lived there until her death last December.

The gated mansion, which overlooks a golf course, has seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a library, a media room and a recreation room with a bar. A garden on the west side of the property leads to a swimming pool and the golf course.

Currently the fourth largest Tampa-area residence listed for sale, the Steinbrenner mansion has a walk-in closet in the master suite that spans 600 square feet. The property comes with a one-bedroom apartment with a dining room, kitchen and living room.

A more affordable connection to the legacy of George and Joan Steinbrenner is a South Tampa house that their son, former Yankees general manager Hal Steinbrenner, has listed for sale for just under $2.1 million. His 3,564-square-foot house, however, is just a fraction of the size of his parents’ place. [Tampa Bay Times]Mike Seemuth
