Pompano Beach city commissioners rezoned land adjacent to an oceanside city park to allow for construction of a 19-story condo development.

By a 4-2 vote, the commissioners lifted the maximum building height at 1508 North Ocean Boulevard from 105 feet to permit the planned condo, which would be 205 feet tall.

The developer, Mount Vernon Property Holdings, plans to construct a two-building complex with a total of 28 units ranging in size from 1,500 square feet to 3,500 square feet, plus ground-floor commercial space.

Mount Vernon Property also entered into a development agreement with the city to make $300,000 of improvements to city-owned North Ocean Park, located between the beach and the 0.62-acre condo development site along North Ocean Boulevard.

At the city commission meeting Tuesday, most Pompano Beach residents who spoke publicly about the development, called Ocean Park Beach Residences, opposed it, Point Publishing reported.

Mayor Rex Hardin, who voted against upzoning the development site, said Ocean Park Beach Residences is a “beautiful” project but “just not compatible, with that park being right behind it.” [Point Publishing]Mike Seemuth
