Open gas valve at closed pizzeria caused Plantation gas explosion: report

Edens is working with Plantation building officials and engineers to secure the shopping center site where a massive gas explosion occurred in July.

A state report released on Friday found that a gas valve was turned on before 7 a.m. the morning of the explosion at a building formerly occupied by Pizzafire, which left the property in December. Officials are investigating how the valve was open, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Edens affiliate Locus Gardens LLC owns the Market On University shopping center at 1041 South University Drive. It acquired the property in August 2007 for $24 million.

The explosion on July 6 injured nearly two dozen people.

Since then, only eight of 25 tenants have been able to continue operating. Edens is working to come up with recovery plans and secure the site during hurricane season. The tenants that have been closed since the explosion include a Korean martial arts studio, a craft yogurt shop, and a children’s coding center.

The buildings at Edens’ Market On University shopping center that were damaged include an L.A. Fitness and Zona Fresca.
