The new FBI regional headquarters north of Miami includes an unusual feature — a high-tech skin designed to better absorb energy.

Guided by President Barack Obama’s mandate that all federal buildings must reach zero net energy use by 2030, the U.S. General Services Administration designed the Miramar facility with numerous energy-efficient features, exMiami reported. Wrapped around the entire 475,000-square-foot building, the skin is expected to significantly reduce electricity usage. Other features include floor-to-ceiling glass, perforated sun screens and a rainwater capture system that could reduce potable water consumption by as much as 95 percent.

Administration officials expect the project to cost $190 million. They hope the facility will be completed by September 2014. [exMiami]Eric Kalis
