Despite a lack of interest from Boca Raton officials, developer Glenn Gromann is pushing for a spring training site to be built there.

Last month, he requested that City Council issue an expression of interest in a bid for such a site – one that would host at least two Major League Baseball teams. The Florida Legislature had signed off on $50 million in incentives for a potential site.

“I’m undaunted,” Gromann told the Sun-Sentinel. “I know there is something here. This is a low-intensity, mass-appeal use.”

The Houston Astros and the Toronto Blue Jays have both refused to confirm that the city is at the top of their list. Palm Beach Gardens tabled recent plans to build a facility for those teams amid criticism from three nearby single-family neighborhoods, as previously reported.

Gromann, also a member of the Planning and Zoning Board, said he has been in talks with Florida Atlantic University to engage in a “mix-and-match deal” that would create a stadium and practice fields across 100 acres in the northwestern section of the city. [Sun-Sentinel]Mark Maurer
