Miami residents are being asked to help shape the future of the historic Coconut Grove Playhouse.

Members of the Coconut Grove Village Council and Coconut Grove Playhouse Advisory Committee are hosting the first of three proposed “public brainstorming” sessions about the theater on Friday at Miami’s City Hall, according to the Miami Herald. Miami-Dade County got state approval to take control of the theater in January. It is operating the site with Florida International University for at least 50 years.

Coconut Grove Playhouse originally opened in 1927 as part of the Paramount chain. The Mediterranean Revival building was converted to a theater during the 1950s. Overwhelming debt led to its closure in 2006.

Current plans call for the theater to become the home of South Florida’s GableStage. [Miami Herald]Eric Kalis
