The city of Coral Gables is moving forward with its nearly $20 million streetscape improvement plan.

New York-based Cooper, Robertson & Partners, an architecture and urban design firm, will design the project, a series of long-discussed streetscape improvements for Miracle Mile and Giralda Avenue in downtown Coral Gables.

Wayne Eldred, owner and operator of Tarpon Bend Restaurant on Miracle Mile, said the project will help grow business in the area. “This project will be the catalyst for positive change for the Mile,” Eldred said in the press release.

Streetscape, which received commission approval in August, will include wider sidewalks, more trees, garden areas and outdoor dining along newly landscaped curbs. The plan also calls for benches, kiosks, mid-block parks, intimate public spaces and plazas.

“I’m confident that any issues that may arise during construction will be immediately addressed,” John O’Rourke, owner of Montica Jewelry on Miracle Mile, said in the press release. “It’s about time that we bring the Miracle back to the Mile.” — Katherine Kallergis
