Apollo Global Management is a private equity firm that has more than $11 billion in real estate assets under management (the firm has more than $163 billion in total assets). The firm was founded in 1990 by Leon Black, and it quickly became known as one of the worlds most prolific buy-out shops. Apollos publicly traded commercial real estate arm, Apollo Commercial Real Estate Finance, is less-well known. The real estate arm handles investments across a broad spectrum of real estate classes, from hospitality to office, industrial and healthcare properties. Among the holdings it has an interest in are Harrahs Entertainment and real estate broker Realogy. In 2012, its head of U.S. real estate investments left the firm following a slow period of investments and a scaling-back of its real estate personnel. However, the firm has been far from quiet in recent years. In 2015, Apollo bought a majority stake for nearly $400 million in scandal-ridden American Realty Capital, which had nearly collapsed after AR admitted to covering up accounting errors.
