Beacon Capital Partners is a Boston-based real estate investment firm that holds a portfolio of office buildings. The firms investors include pension funds, endowments, foundations, sovereign wealth funds, and insurance companies. It has offices in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, D.C., London, Luxembourg, and Paris, in addition to its Boston headquarters. In 1997, the senior managers of Beacon Properties Corporation sold their NYSE-traded office building-focused real estate investment trust, called REIT Beacon Properties, to Sam Zell's Equity Office Properties Trust for $4.4 billion. In order to continue working and investing together, they formed successor firm Beacon Capital Partners in 1998. In 2007, Beacon Capital Partners bought a portfolio of 73 buildings, including some that senior managers had sold to Zell in the 1997 deal, for $6.2 billion, at a market peak. The debt-fueled deal went sour after rent at many of the buildings dropped in the wake of the global financial crisis and tenants such as online retailer Amazon did not renew their leases. MK
