The Carlyle Group is one of the world's largest asset managers, claiming $178 billion in assets under its purview. As such, it has been an active investor in New York City real estate since its 1987 founding in Washington, D.C. The firm's real estate group, one of the most active in the United States, has launched seven funds.

Carlyle's New York holdings have included all or parts of myriad properties, including the office building at 920 Broadway, the retail space at 570 Seventh Avenue, the Rushmore condos on the Upper West Side and the commercial tower at 666 Fifth Avenue.

Carlyle does much of its real estate investing through individual funds that act as de facto subsidiaries. The firm launched its seventh real estate fund in 2014. The $4.16 billion fund was one of the biggest real estate funds since the Great Recession.

William Conway Jr., Daniel DAniello and David Rubenstein founded Carlyle, and are still involved in its management. Managing director Robert Stuckey runs the firms U.S. real estate funds. Carlyle is still headquartered in Washington, with New York offices at 520 Madison Avenue.
