Cheskel Schwimmer companies is a Williamsburg-based developer that has built all around the outer boroughs of New York City. In Queens, the firm has redeveloped the former Schwartz Chemical Company plant in Long Island City (during which it removed the smokestacks of the factory, to some controversy), converting it in 2008 into a condo project known as the PowerHouse and later another condo project called the Yards. More recently Cheskel Schwimmer has turned its attentions to the Bronx. The company also in 2015 had plans to build a 25-story rental building just off the Major-Deegan Expressway, and has had plans in developing the so-called Piano District in Southern Bronx, taking advantage of the waterfront property there. Cheskel Schwimmerwas one of the developers that signed onto a statement of principles in the wake of the hyper-gentrification, adhering to promises to also bring affordable housing and jobs to the borough.
