Breaking Ground is the nonprofit developer formerly known as Common Ground. Founded in 1990 by housing development leader Rosanne Haggerty, Breaking Ground is dedicated to building temporary and permanent housing for the homeless. Among its most notable projects include the 1991 rehabilitation of the former Times Square Hotel into a homeless shelter and the reopening of the historic Prince George Hotel in 1999. Most of the organizations buildings are in Manhattan, but it also owns the Cedarwoods and the Betty Ruth and Milton B. Hollander Foundation Center, both in Connecticut. It also has been involved in creating halfway houses for the formerly homeless, some of which (like proposed housing in Queens) have received mixed results. In 2011 the organization launched a national campaign to end homelessness, indexing and ranking homeless people in order to determine the level of help they needed. In 2015 it changed its name to Breaking Ground in a rebranding designed to coincide with its greater focus on development and construction.
