A relative newcomer, CompassRock Real Estate was formed in 2012 as a spin-off of CW Capital Asset Management but now has properties in more than 18 markets, though many of those are in New York City. It specializes in commercial property management, multi-family high-rise management, and real estate consulting.
CompassRock has taken over a number of troubled properties. In its first year doing business, the company took over the Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village complex, which had dealt with bankruptcy issues and allegations of rent overcharges over the years.
Two years later, in 2014, CompassRock dealt with a controversy of its own. Black tenants in the Harlem Riverton complex filed a $10 million lawsuit against CompassRock, claiming it and CW Capital Asset Management overcharged them in a bid to kick them out of their seven-building complex. CW had taken over the property in 2010 and CompassRock managed it since 2013.
