Equity Office is a portfolio of commercial and office buildings, which is owned by the Blackstone Group. At one time Equity Office was considered the largest portfolio of office buildings in the United States, with several high-profile buildings such as the San Fransisco Ferry Building and One Worldwide Plaza in Manhattan. Three years earlier Equity Office had gained the fame of largest real estate investment trust in the United States after it acquired Verizons headquarters. In 2007 Blackstone purchased the group for $23 billion and the assumption of $16 billion in debt, with the hopes of tripling its investment. The deal didnt work out as expected (the housing bubble burst soon thereafter), but investors have prospered as Blackstone has gradually sold off the portfolio of office buildings. That same year it sold a large stake of its Manhattan office portfolio to Harry Macklowe. In 2011 the firm purchased the upper floors of the former New York Times building at 229 West 49th Street from Africa Israel USA for $160 million, turning the publishers dining room into a basketball court to attract prospective tenants. In 2014 it sold a package of Northern California office buildings for $3.5 billion.
