Host Hotels & Resorts is an international hotel investment and management company with hotels belonging to several leading brands, including Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, and Sheraton. With roughly 60,000 hotel rooms globally, Host Hotels is also considered a leading owner of luxury hotels. The company was formed in 1993 after Marriott split, and within five years it was restructured as a real estate investment trust. Hotel Hotels has since taken several large steps to become the worlds largest real estate investment trust, such as in 2005 when it purchased a block of 38 Starwood Hotel properties for $4.1 billion, including a dozen Westin hotels, two W hotels, and numerous Sheratons. In the years that followed Host continued buying hotels, including several large ones in Manhattan. In 2010 it bought the W New York-Union Square for $185 million, and a year later it paid $313 million for the New York Helmsley. In 2013 Host purchased the Times Square Marriott Marquis in what was called at the time one of the worst deals in New York City history (Host, which had leased the prime location hotel since 1982, paid roughly $20 million for it).
