The bank chopped up a $559 million loan into pieces and sold it to eight different groups. In late 2008, as the credit markets were collapsing, the bank filed a foreclosure suit on behalf of the buyers who had purchased those pieces. Meanwhile, iStar Financial, which owned the largest portion of the loan, $224 million, hired Cushman to sell the note in the fall of 2009, but took it off the market because bids came in well below the $160 million asking price...
