The LeFrak Organization is a New York City-based, privately-held, family-run company that owns, develops, and manages real estate. The company also operates as a private equity fund, acquiring private businesses, as a hedge fund that trades in securities, and as an energy firm, through its holdings of oil and gas wells and mineral rights. The company formerly specialized in no-frills residential developments, including Battery Park City, LeFrak City in Queens, and Newport, Jersey City. Since the death of founder Samuel J. LeFrak, the Lefrak Organization has undertook more upscale developments. Its portfolio includes 400 buildings, most of them self-developed, and concentrated in New York and New Jersey. LeFrak also owns real estate in South Florida and on the West coast. The portfolio spans residential and office buildings as well as hotels and retail properties. As of September 2015, Richard LeFrak, Samuels son, was the companys chairman and chief executive. -GB
