The Economic Development Corporation is the official economic-development engine of New York City, a nonprofit that works at the behest, and often the direction, of City Hall to drive real estate development throughout the five boroughs.

It was formed in 1991, when several different entities merged, including the Public Development Corporation, which dated from the mid-1960s, when it was charged with shoring up the citys faltering economy. The scope of its parentage has meant that the current EDC touches just about every major project involving city-owned or controlled land (as opposed to that which the state or the federal government might control).

It manages that land as well as seeks to maximize its potential, not always without controversy. EDC-directed projects as of spring 2015 include the redevelopments of Willets Point, Queens, and Hunts Point in the Bronx.
