    Safra Family

The Safra Family is an influential and powerful banking and real estate family renowned for its secrecy and enormous resources. The family set its roots with original patriarch Jacob Safra, who became known as a shrewd banker in the Ottoman Empire.

Later, the family moved its operations to Brazil and later Switzerland, where Jacob's son Edmond Safra helped create the Trade Development Bank. The family began U.S. operations in the 1960s, establishing Republic National Bank of New York (which was later sold to HSBC for $10 billion).

Jacob's son Joseph Safra ran the Safra Group until his death in late 2020, and was considered one of the richest bankers in the world. The family has been a player in the worldwide real estate market, with an aim to primarily buy assets to hold them and preserve wealth rather than flip them for immediate profit. In 2014 the family purchased the Gherkin skyscraper at 30 St. Mary Axe in London for $1.1 billion, as well as townhouses in Manhattans Upper East Side and office space downtown.
