Skidmore Owings & Merrill is a Chicago-based architecture, urban planning, and engineering firm founded in 1936. It is the architecture firm of record for One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, which has replaced with the original World Trade Center destroyed in the September 11 terrorist attack. The firm, which sometimes abbreviates its name to SOM, is credited with propagating the popularity of modernist, international-style glass skyscrapers. Its designs are also known for height, and they include the Willis Tower in Chicago, tallest building in the world for 20 years, and the Burj Khalifa, which held the title of worlds tallest building as of 2015 and cost $1.5 billion to build. Over the decades, the commercial designs of Skidmore Owings & Merrill in New York have included Lever House at 390 Park Avenue, One Chase Manhattan Plaza, One Worldwide Plaza, and the mixed-use Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle. SOM also does brisk business designing skyscrapers in China. -TA
