Suzuki Capital is a commercial real estate firm that focuses on investment, development, and hospitality. Founded in 2010, the firm has made a name for itself by investing in commercial properties. The firm has also had its share of bad press. Its principal, Sam Suzuki, for years was labeled a slumlord and in 2012 he faced a lawsuit from one of his condominium boards, which alleged fraud and negligence in how the apartments in the building were sold. Suzuki spent a month in jail in 2010 for failing to make repairs that had been ordered by a Bronx jail. The criticism of the firm has tapered in recent years. In 2014 Suzuki demolished a former historic police precinct in Gramercy to make way for a seven-story condominium project at the site. A year later the firm joined with Gothic Development Group to develop a residential and retail project in the Calvary Cathedral of Praises parking lot near Coney Island, which drew some concerns from nearby residents.
