Westchester County, the county immediately to the north of New York City, is known as a suburb where Manhattans wealthy and middle-class residents move to raise their kids because of the areas excellent public schools and convenient commuter railroad links. It has a population of nearly 1 million, according to the 2010 Census. The term Westchester is shorthand for dozens of municipalities, including Yonkers. The countys housing varies by both type and price point. Townhouses, other styles of attached single-family homes, and high-rise condominiums proliferate in the downtowns of towns like Scarsdale and Larchmont. Large, detached single-family homes, including mansions, dot the countryside and more suburban areas. -TA
