WeWork is a provider of shared office space and employer services, founded by Adam Neumann and Miguel McKelvey in Soho in 2010. WeWork office space comes with complimentary access to a variety of community areas and amenities, and caters to freelancers and startups, especially those in tech.

By June 2015, WeWork had a total valuation of roughly $10 billion after receiving a $5 billion valuation just six months before. The valuation made WeWork the third most valuable office landlord in the country, more than half the size of the largest, Boston Properties, whose co-founder Mort Zuckerman is also one of WeWork's best-known investors.

Backed by Masayoshi Son's SoftBank and hyped by then-CEO Neumann's grandiose rhetoric, WeWork's valuation eventually soared to $47 billion in 2019 in the runup to its planned IPO. But the offering collapsed after financial disclosures brought to light mismanagement, self-dealing and other financial shenanigans under Neumann's leadership.

In the wake of the failed IPO debacle, the firm's worth plunged to $9 billion, including debt. Neumann was ousted as CEO in late 2019 and replaced by former Brookfield Property Partners exec Sandeep Mathrani in early 2020.
