Winter Organization is a real estate firm founded in 1901 by Polish immigrant Benjamin Winter. The firm first became known for painting tenements in the Lower East Side, but within two decades the Winter Organization gained a reputation for seeking out undervalued but well-located properties, nabbing the Vanderbilt Mansion, Hotel Delmonico, the Stanhope, and Hotel Leonori by the 1920s. By the 1950s, the firm (then run by son Marvin Winter) had developed a number of Midtown properties, including 800 Fifth Avenue and 210 Central Park South. Today the firm generally has holdings south of Central Park and north of Houston Street, but its properties include both commercial and residential buildings. In 2015 the firm would sell the Crown Building at 730 Fifth Avenue for $1.78 billion, one of that years biggest deals. In 2014 the firm expanded again to create its privately held management arm Winter Properties, which was founded by great-grandson David Winter. The firm also serves as a joint-venture equity for other developers and operators and focuses on primarily commercial properties in all five boroughs.
