Anthony Malkin is chairman and CEO of the Manhattan-based commercial real estate investment trust, the Empire State Realty Trust, which owns significant office properties, including the Empire State Building.

ESRT controls more than 10 million square feet of commercial space in the New York metropolitan area, including One Grand Central Place and 250 West 57th Street.

Malkin undertook a celebrated $500 million revamp of the Empire State Building in the summer of 2009, in part to make it more environmentally friendly and also to make it more hospitable to larger tenants; the building by 2009 had hosted as many 800 tenants in its 2.85 million square feet. It has since signed a series of larger-scale leases. Malkin also securitized the building, filing an IPO in February 2012.

After graduating Harvard in 1985 and after a short career in venture capital, Malkin joined the family firm his grandfather, Lawrence Wien, had started years before. In 2002, he worked with his father, Peter Malkin, in wresting control of the Empire State Building from an ownership group that included Donald Trump and Leona Helmsley.

The blockbuster example in Midtown was a clothing supply firm reportedly looking to lease 500,000 square feet in the Empire State Building. A pending deal could not come at a better time for the iconic tower, which was dealt a blow last month when the City Council approved plans for Vornado Realty Trust to build a nearby skyscraper. The owner of the Empire State Building, Anthony Malkin, was aggressively arguing that the proposed tower, 15 Penn Plaza, will block the views from his building (see Rivalries rev up)...
