David I. Berley is chairman at real estate investment firm Walter & Samuels. Berley decided to follow in the footsteps of his father, a property manager, and began his career in the real estate industry under the banner of Berley & Company. In 1968 he left the firm and joined Walter & Samuels. Within five years he bought the company from one of the senior partners, and began making a name for his high-profile commercial property deals and condominium conversions, primarily in Manhattan. His approach over the years has been to hold properties over long periods of time, not focus on short-term gains. Berley has worked with the Young Mens/Women/s Real Estate Association of New York, and received both the Young Man of the Year Award in 1977 and the Young Real Estate Senior Man of the Year Award nearly twenty years later. He is also an avid collector of antique cars, owning more than 130 of them.
