In 1971 Fred Wilpon co-founded real estate investment firm Sterling Equities, which he expanded from owning properties only in New York City to 43 states. Wilpon is also the chairman and CEO of the New York Mets, having purchased 1 percent of the team in 1980 and then the controlling shares 22 years later. He also helped co-found the regional sports television network SportsNet in 2006, and the Mets’ minor league affiliate team the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2000 (where he is currently chairman). Wilpon was also involved in the imbroglio over his firm’s investment with Bernie Madoff, though he denied knowing about the fraud until it was revealed publicly. After taking heavy losses from the Ponzi scheme, Wilpon reportedly sought to sell a large chunk of his ownership in the Mets (he would later refinance the Mets’ finances). Wilpon, who is involved with a number of charities, graduated from the University of Michigan. He and his wife have a foundation at the university’s school of literature.
