Harry Macklowe is a veteran New York City real estate developer. He is the chairman of Macklowe Properties, a firm he founded in 1960.

His most recent projects include One Wall Street, 200 East 59th Street and the 432 Park Avenue luxury condo.

Macklowe is recognized as one of NYC's real estate biggest risk takers. In 2003, Macklowe paid $1.4 billion to buy the GM Building, a record-breaking purchase that was eclipsed a few years later by his $7 billion acquisition of seven Midtown office buildings. The latter investment went south in 2008, when Macklowe defaulted on a $5.8 billion loan associated with the deal, and lenders assumed control of the buildings.

Later that year, Macklowe was also forced to sell the GM Building and three other towers. In 2010, his son, Billy Macklowe, severed professional ties with him.

In 2017, Macklowe's wife of 58 years, Linda Macklowe, filed for divorce. Macklowe reportedly offered Linda $1 billion to walk away from the marriage.

Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., Macklowe attended the University of Alabama, New York University and the School of Visual Arts before dropping out to enter real estate.

A majority condo interest in the 44-story office building sold at an estimated price of about $355 million, or $392 per square foot. The tower is the sixth building to sell from the $7 billion portfolio Harry Macklowe purchased from Equity Office Properties in 2007. Macklowe was forced to surrender the properties after he defaulted on his debt to lender Deutsche Bank, which put the seven buildings up for sale. Worldwide Plaza at 825 Eighth Avenue is the package's only property that remains on the market.

Financing was provided by Deutsche Bank and Fortress Investment Group, as arranged by Robert Horowitz of Cooper Horowitz. The deal came just before the Blackstone Group closed on its $39 billion acquisition of Equity Office Properties, saving Blackstone $212 million in transfer taxes.
