    John Sexton

    New York University
    70 Washington Square South
    New York, NY 10012
    (212) 998-2345

John Sexton is the fifteenth president of New York University, as well as a writer, a law professor, and the former dean of NYU Law School. Since being designated the universitys president in 2001, Sexton has overseen an expansion of the school, both locally and internationally, which has drawn criticism from faculty, the residents of the West Village, as well as human rights activists, who drew attention to rights violations endemic in the United Arab Emirates, where one NYU campus is located. Sextons vision for NYU, dubbed Global Network University, includes almost a dozen international academic centers and portal campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai, as well as plans to expand the universitys footprint in Greenwich Village by some two million square feet. Partially in response to the criticism, Sexton has said he will step down when his contract expires in 2016.

He received a JD from Harvard Law School in 1979, a PhD is history from Fordham University in 1978, as well as a BA in history and an MA in comparative religion from the latter university. He joined NYUs Law School faculty in 1981, received tenure in 1983, and was named the School's Dean in 1988. He also holds honorary degrees from over a dozen universities. Sexton graduated from Brooklyn Preparatory School, a Jesuit high school also known as Brooklyn Prep. A Catholic-inspired spirituality informs many of his life choices as well as the way he runs NYU. He is a widower with two adult children, Jed and Katie. His wife Lisa E. Goldberg, who he married in 1976, died of a brain aneurysm in 2007.
