Richard A. Wilpon is a senior partner at real estate investment firm Sterling Equities and co-CEO of its associated management firm Sterling American Funds. Wilpon joined Sterling Equities when it was founded in 1972 by his brother Fred, and is also on the firm’s investment committee. Wilpon has said he believes residential properties a better and safer bet than commercial or retail properties because the risk can be spread out among tenants. Like his brother, Wilpon also has a financial interest in the New York Mets, serving on the board, and is also involved in the Mets’ affiliate team the Brooklyn Cyclones. He was caught up, like many at Sterling, in the aftermath of the Bernie Madoff scandal, after allegations came out that Sterling executives knew about Ponzi scheme. Wilpon works with several non-profits and schools, including the Brooklyn College Foundation (the school where he received his undergraduate degree) and Washington University in St. Louis.
