Sam Zell is the chairman of Chicago-based Equity International Group and Equity Residential.

Through the latter, he is active in New York City real estate, entering the market in 2004 and acquiring more than two dozen properties.

In early 2010, Equity Residential bought the rights to build 111 market-rate apartments and nearly 10,000 square feet of retail space at the corner of 23rd Street and 10th Avenue in Chelsea. Around the same time, Equity Residential also acquired the last three apartment towers of embattled developer Harry Macklowe: the Rivertower at 520 East 54th Street; the Longacre House at 305 West 50th Street; and 777 Sixth Avenue.

Perhaps Zells biggest New York splash came when he sold his Equity Office Properties to the Blackstone Group in 2007 for $39 billion.

A Chicago native, Zell graduated from the University of Michigan and its law school. He started in real estate in the Chicago area in the late 1960s investing in distressed properties.
