Scott Rechler led the formation of RXR Realty at an auspicious time: 2007. The firm was born of the $6 billion sale of real estate investment trust Reckson Associates to SL Green. Rechler, an executive at Reckson, and two pension funds then took about 30 percent of Recksons portfolio private, seeding the ground for the new firm.

That firm then went on a buying spree. Some of RXRs most notable purchases coming out of the bust years of 2007 and 2008 included a $920 million deal for the Starrett-Lehigh Building on West 26th Street; 237 Park Avenue for about $800 million; and 340 Madison Avenue for roughly $570 million. In 2010 and 2011 alone, RXR invested more than $3 billion in Manhattan real estate.

RXRs portfolio now includes some 106 properties in the tri-state area covering more than 18 million square feet and with a gross value of about $5.5 billion. Rechler has been the architect of much of that growth. Before RXR, he was chairman and CEO of Reckson, leading much of its growth as well before the 2007 sale and spin off.

Aside from the private sector, Rechler has also been a member of the board of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, appointed in June 2011 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He has been vice-chairman since September of that year.

Rechler went to Clark University and earned a masters in real estate from New York University. He was born in 1967 and grew up on Long Island.  -TA
