The Four Seasons is a restaurant venue located in the Seagram Building, established in 1959, and located at 99 East 52nd Street. It is known for pioneering the use seasonal ingredients in high-end American cuisine, for being a favored destination for the expensive and opulent power lunches of yesteryear, and for its midcentury modern, International style interiors. Philip Johnson and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed those interiors, which received landmark protection in 1989. The venue, which features twenty-food ceilings, includes two dining rooms, the Grill Room and the Pool Room. The latter is centered on a two-foot square marble pool with bubbling water. The floor-to-ceiling windows are draped gold-anodized aluminum chains that undulate with air currents and shimmer in the light. In the walnut-paneled Grill Room, thousands of thin brass rods hang like a chandelier above the bar. As a nod to the restaurants name, managers have traditionally changed the massive plantings throughout the space on a seasonal basis. As New York Citys power-centers have moved downtown and outer borough and as other expensive restaurants have opened over the decades, the Four Seasons has kept a loyal, albeit greying clientele. Aby Rosen and Michael Fuchs bought the Seagram Building, including the restaurant venue, in 2000. It was expected to reopen under new management after the lease held by Julian Niccolini and Alex von Bidder expires in 2016. _MK
