In some ways, 1274 Fifth Avenue stands alone, though you wouldnt know it to look at the six-story building. Bounded by Central Park and several of the most well-regarded New York museums, it is one of the few rentals on that stretch of Fifth Avenue. It also has some history. The building, built in 1935, once housed former New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, who lived in the penthouse just before Gracie Mansion became the official mayoral residence in 1942.
The building fell into disrepair for several years, with one-third of its units vacant, until Mercury Capital Corporation bought it for $1.3 million in 1995 from Goldfarb Properties, which has properties primarily in northern Manhattan and the Bronx. Mercury pumped another million dollars into the building to renovate it. Stonehenge Partners later purchased the building, lured by the spacious units and park views, and dubbed it Stonehenge Park and later Stonehenge on Fifth. ¾-NR
