Chickering Hall, an ornate 1924 Art Deco building known for its rooftop decorations, was originally built as the headquarters for piano maker Chickering (next door to competitor Sohmer at 31 West 57th). The 15-story building offers 60,385 square feet of office and showroom space; office tenants include Swarovski.

Vornado Realty Trust and the Lefrak Organization bought the building in 2006 for $58.5 million, around the same time they bought the properties at 31, 49 and 50 West 57th. Local activists who backed an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to win landmark status for neighboring 31 West 57th Street, home of the Rizzoli Bookstore, accused Vornado of destroying structural artwork on Chickering Hall in an attempt to prevent the building from being declared a landmark.
