It was designed by Swanke Hayden Connell architects and was completed in 1982. The design makes use of a polished red granite skin on the facade. The building is LEED Silver certified for sustainability and energy efficiency.

Financial services firm Jefferies & Company occupies 473,079-square feet at 520 Madison Avenue, nearly half the building. Other notable tenants are Carlyle Investment Management, which takes 117,000 square feet of space, and Davidson Kempner Capital Management, which occupies over 70,000-square-feet. The building is owned by Tishman Speyer.
