Battery Park City is a residential neighborhood on 92-acre site, one-third of it public green space, on the southwestern tip of the island of Manhattan. It is located on man-made landfill, reclaimed from the Hudson River using soil and rock excavated from construction sites in lower Manhattan, including the old World Trade Center. Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City Authority (BPCA), a public-benefit corporation created by New York State under the authority of the Urban Development Corporation, owns and manages the entire community. Battery Park CityÍs commercial developments include the Brookfield Place complex of towers along Liberty Street comprising 8 million square feet of office, retail, and public space, and the Goldman Sachs headquarters at 200 West Street, completed in 2009 and totaling 2.1 million square feet. Stuyvesant High School, an elite New York City public high school, is located at 345 Chambers Street in the neighborhood. Battery Park CityÍs residential buildings are almost exclusively condominiums and the neighborhood has a self-contained feel because West Street, a busy thoroughfare, separates it from the Financial District and the rest of Manhattan. Its residential condominiums include the 32-story Riverhouse, the 36-story Visionaire at 70 Little West Street, and One Rector Park, a rental-to-condo conversion building at 333 Rector Place. -TA
