Battery Park
New York, NY 10004
Battery Park
Battery Park is a 25-acre public park in lower Manhattan dating from the 17th century and surrounded by some of the most valuable commercial and residential real estate in the city. Its positionfacing New York Harbor as well as within close walking distance of the new World Trade Center and departure points for ferries to Staten and Ellis islandsconsistently makes Battery Park one of the busier green spaces in New York City. The parks internal features include Castle Clinton on it north end, the last remnants of when it was used as an actual military battery; the Hope Garden AIDS memorial; and a memorial to servicemen who died defending the East Coast. To the northwest of Battery Park is the similarly named neighborhood, Battery Park City, a planned community built up in the 1970s and 1980s; and now containing pricey condos. To the east of the park is the Financial District, with its increasingly expensive office space. -TA
