Brooklyn Navy Yard

Brooklyn Navy Yard
Brooklyn, NY 11205
Retail, Residential, Leasing/Rental, Multifamily

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a former ship-building yard just up the East River from New York Harbor on the coast of the borough of the same name. Ship-building ceased at the yard in the late 1960s after more than two centuries.

Through various public-private iterations since then, the Brooklyn Navy Yard has transitioned to being a commercial and manufacturing hub. As of spring 2014, the 300-acre spread had a 99 percent occupancy rate for its 4.5 million square feet of leasable space. More than 7,000 employees work there, too, and several companies have been at the yard for more than a decade.

The yard and its landlord, New York City, announced in 2014 that it was undertaking its largest expansion since World War II, when it was at its ship-building peak. The expansion is expected to create 1.8 million more square feet, and is being paid for through roughly $206 million in state and city funding.

David Ehrenberg is the president and CEO of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation.
