Manhattan Plaza is a 46-story, 1,688-unit, federally-subsidized housing tower located at 400 West 43rd Street, just west of Times Square. It occupies an entire block, bounded by 43rd Street, Ninth Avenue, 42nd Street, and Tenth Avenue. The developers who erected the building, designed by architect David Todd, in 1977 intended it to be luxury apartments, but went bankrupt. Seventy percent of the buildings units are occupied by performing artists with the balance occupied by community elderly and community low-income residents.

In 2003, Related Companies, a developer and landlord, acquired the complex from Manhattan Plaza Associates LP, a partnership headed by Richard Ravitch and Irving Fischer. Related Chief Executive Stephen M. Ross said in 2004 that his company planned to extend the buildings Section 8 contract, which runs to 2017. Building amenities include a playground, five tennis courts, and gym, a swimming pool, and a 1,000-car garage. The Laurie Beechman Theatre, formerly the West Bank Cafe Downstairs Theater Bar, is a dinner theater located in the basement of the building. Manhattan Plaza also has 50,000 square feet of retail space at its base.
