Midtown West, also known as HellÍs Kitchen and Clinton, is a neighborhood in Manhattan, bounded by 34th Street, 59th Street, 8th Avenue, and the Hudson River. Many of its residential rental buildings are 6-story walks-ups that previously housed impoverished Irish immigrants. Its proximity to Times Square and the Broadway theater district supports a restaurant row that caters to theatergoers. Contemporary commercial real estate development in HellÍs Kitchen includes The New York Times headquarters at 620 Eighth Avenue, a 52-story tower developed by Forest City Ratner that opened in 2007 across from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. In 2011, developer SJP Properties completed a 40-story office building at 11 Times Square. Law firms spearheaded the neighborhoodÍs transformation into an extension of central Midtown, starting in 1989, when Cravath Swaine & Moore crossed Seventh Avenue to relocate at Worldwide Plaza at 50th Street and Eighth Avenue. Residential development has included the Related CompaniesÍ One MiMa, a 151-unit rental at 10th Avenue and 42nd Street.
