Stonehenge 57

400 East 57th Street
New York, NY 10022
Residential, Leasing/Rental, Multifamily

This 19-floor building was erected in 1931 is an old one in the posh Sutton Place neighborhood. In 2012, real estate developers Stonehenge Partners and SL Green Realty purchased the 260-unit multi-family building as part of an eight-property bulk deal; Stonehenge 57 represented a large chunk of the deal, a reported $109 million of the $416 million total purchase price. The building was renamed Stonehenge 57, and after renovations rents increased. Puerto Rican restaurant Sofrito has been on the ground floor since 2010, when it took over from one of Jimmy Rodriguezs restaurants, which had shuttered in 2003.

In 2013, the building was the site of a horrific accident. A 35-year-old advertising executive, on her first date, fell 17 floors to her death after the aluminum railing she leaned against while having a smoke buckled. The railing was the original installed in 1931. After the accident, the citys Department of Buildings investigated and issued a vacate order for all the buildings corner apartment balconies. -NR
