The Cambridge

48-50 37th Street
Long Island City, NY 11101
Residential, Leasing/Rental, Multifamily

This seven-story apartment building at 48-50 37th Street in Long Island City, Queens, has 120 units.

It was built in 1961 by the LeFrak Organization, one of the New York City regions most prominent real estate ownership and management groups. Its holdings include more than 40 million square feet of residential, commercial and retail holdings nationwide. These include locally the office tower at 40 West 57th Street (LeFrak controls seven office towers in Midtown), the Gateway apartment complex in downtown Manhattan and the massive 20-building LeFrak City in Queens.

The Cambridge was in keeping with the LeFrak Organizations general approach to development in the 1960s (and, off and on, afterward): middle-class housing at market-rate rents. The Cambridge, in other words, is less expensive than other market-rate options in an increasingly gentrifying western Queens, due in large part to a dearth of bells and whistles, such as doormen.
