Willets Point is an area in Corona, Queens, bounded by Northern Boulevard, 126th Street and the Mets ballpark, Citi Field. The site, collection of auto-repair shops and scrap yards, is the focus of redevelopment efforts. In 2007, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city planned to redevelop Willets Point as the site of a convention center, 5,500 housing units, 1.7 million square feet of retail, an elementary school, and 500,000 square feet of office space. Existing Willets Point businesses sued the city over what they said was lax infrastructure in the area. The lawsuit was dismissed, but succeeded in slowing down progress of the redevelopment program. This was further slowed by admissions of two city economic development agencies that they illegally lobbied the City Council. In June 2012, the city unveiled a 1 million-square-foot component of the plans: a mall near Citi Field to be developed by Sterling Equities and the Related Companies. The plans include a hotel. -TA
