The Landmarks Preservation Commission will not extend landmark status to the Dakota Stable, a 19th-century Romanesque Revival building on the Upper West Side. The board voted 8-2 to reject the building due to the fact that original architectural detail will soon been removed from the building at Amsterdam Avenue and 77th Street — legally — by the owners. Critics say these damaging alterations, approved while the building was under consideration by Landmarks, was the latest example of owners conspiring “to remove what is most valued from historic buildings to avoid landmark designations.” more [NYT]
