Mayor seeks removal of 9/11 stairs

Mayor Bloomberg says the Survivors’ Staircase at Ground Zero should not be kept in its entirety at the World Trade Center site after rebuilding occurs. The Lower Manhattan Development Corp. is proposing to keep a portion of the stairway where it is now but to either destroy or move the rest of the structure, which was used as an escape route during 9/11. Preservationists want the 175-ton structure incorporated into Tower 2 at the site. A public review period for the LMDC’s proposal ended yesterday. more [NYDN]
