The city’s six-member Franchise and Concession Review Committee will vote today on whether to accept a controversial proposal that will give a group of private schools guaranteed after-school access to most of the ball fields at the city-owned Randall’s Island Park. Future improvements and renovations to Randall’s Island would probably not occur without the arrangement, said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe, because the city wouldn’t be able to foot the bill. The schools would pay $52.4 million over the next 20 years for the fields’ maintenance. At least two members of the Franchise and Concession Review Committee have said they will vote against the plan. more [AMNY]
